Eligibility Criteria

Educational Qualification

  • Essential Qualification: Candidates must hold a B.E./B.Tech degree in the specified Engineering streams from universities/institutions recognized by an Act of Central or State Legislature in India, or other educational bodies established by Parliament, or institutions deemed Universities/Autonomous Universities under relevant UGC, IIT, AICTE, NITSER, and IIIT Acts.
  • For Final Year Students: Applicants currently in their final year of an Engineering degree program are eligible. They are required to provide proof of passing their Engineering Degree Examination, along with mark sheets for all semesters/years, by 01 October 2026. The official Engineering Degree Certificate must be submitted within 12 weeks of the training commencement date at PCTA.
  • Important Note: Graduates from foreign universities are ineligible to apply for this course.
  • Stream Requirement: Only the Engineering streams and their officially recognized equivalent streams, as specified in the notification, will be considered. Discrepancies between the Engineering stream nomenclature on degree certificates/mark sheets and the online application form will lead to the cancellation of the application.

Nationality

  • Must be a citizen of India, or
  • A subject of Nepal, or
  • A person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, or East African countries with the intention of permanent settlement in India (an eligibility certificate is mandatory).

Marital Status

  • Only unmarried male candidates are eligible to submit applications.
  • Candidates are strictly prohibited from marrying during the training period and are not permitted to reside with parents/guardians.

Selection Process

  • Step 1 – Online Application: All candidates must submit their applications online via the official website: www.joinindianarmy.nic.in.
  • Step 2 – Shortlisting: Applications will be shortlisted based on the cumulative percentage of marks achieved by candidates up to their final semester/year. A stream-wise cut-off will be applied, determined by the vacancy-to-call-up ratio.
  • Step 3 – Allotment of Selection Centre: Following shortlisting, candidates will be informed of their allotted selection centre via email. SSB interview dates will be chosen on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Step 4 – SSB Interview: A two-stage selection procedure will be conducted at one of the designated Selection Centres: Prayagraj (UP), Bhopal (MP), Bengaluru (Karnataka), and Jalandhar Cantt (Punjab). The interview process spans a maximum of five days.
  • Step 5 – Medical Examination: Candidates recommended after Stage-2 of the SSB will proceed for a medical examination. The validity of the SSB medical examination results is 270 days.
  • Step 6 – Merit List: A merit list will be compiled, categorized by engineering stream/subject, based on the scores obtained in the SSB interview.
  • Step 7 – Joining Letter: Candidates who feature in the merit list, fall within the specified stream-wise vacancies, and are medically fit will receive joining letters for pre-commissioning training at PCTA, provided all eligibility criteria are met.

General Information/Instructions

  • Type of Commission: Short Service Commission (SSC).
  • Training Duration: A 49-week training program at the Officers Training Academy, Gaya, Bihar.
  • Rank After Training: Successful trainees will be commissioned as a Lieutenant.
  • Commission Grant: Upon commencement of the course, selected candidates will be granted a Short Service Commission on probation in the rank of Lieutenant.
  • Ante Date Seniority: Engineering Graduates will receive one year of ante-date seniority from their date of commission.
  • Tenure of Engagement: Officers are obliged to serve for an initial period of ten years.
  • Option for Release: Officers have options for release after 5 years of service (with Army HQ approval), 10 years of service, or 14 years of service.
  • Option for Permanent Commission: Officers interested in a Permanent Commission may be considered during their 10th year of service, subject to eligibility and suitability.
  • Service Extension: The initial ten-year service tenure may be extended by an additional four years, subject to eligibility.
  • Arms/Services Allocation: Primary Arms/Services include the Corps of Engineers, Corps of Signals, and Corps of Electronics and Mechanical Engineers. Candidates may also be commissioned into other Arms/Services as per organizational needs.
  • Training Cost: The complete cost of training at PCTA is borne by the Government.
  • Cost Recovery: Candidates who are withdrawn from the training academy for personal reasons will be required to refund the cost of training, currently ₹16,260 per week (as of 2023), or as revised periodically.
  • Promotion Criteria: Promotions are as follows: Captain after 2 years, Major after 6 years, and Lieutenant Colonel after 13 years of reckonable commissioned service.
  • Liability of Service: Officers may be commissioned into any Arm/Service and are liable to serve in any part of the world.
  • Marriage Restriction: Candidates must remain unmarried until the completion of their entire training at the Officers Training Academy. Marriage during the training period will lead to discharge and recovery of incurred expenditure.
